Properly winterizing your outboard engine is essential to protect it from freezing temperatures, corrosion, and fuel degradation during the off-season. Follow these simple steps from Hinkle Marine to keep your engine in top shape when spring arrives.
🧼 Step 1: Clean the Engine
- Rinse the exterior with fresh water to remove salt, dirt, and grime.
- Flush the engine with fresh water using muffs or a flush kit.
- Dry the engine and apply a corrosion inhibitor to metal surfaces.
⛽ Step 2: Stabilize the Fuel System
- Add a fuel stabilizer to the gas tank and run the engine for 10-15 minutes to circulate.
- Drain the carburetor or fuel injectors if recommended by the manufacturer.
🔧 Step 3: Change Engine Oil and Gear Lube
- Drain and replace engine oil and the oil filter.
- Drain and refill lower unit gear lube, checking for any water intrusion.
⚙️ Step 4: Fog the Engine Cylinders
- Spray fogging oil into the cylinders through the spark plug holes.
- Turn the engine over manually to coat the cylinder walls.
- Reinstall spark plugs and tighten to specifications.
🛠️ Step 5: Final Checks and Storage
- Disconnect the battery and store it in a cool, dry place.
- Inspect and replace anodes if worn.
- Cover the engine with a breathable cover to prevent dust accumulation.
